Courses in R for earth scientists by John H (Jack) Schuenemeyer Southwest Statistical Consulting, LLC R is an open source language increasingly used in the earth, environmental, and biological sciences. It contains contributions from leading researchers and practitioners around the world. Applications include mathematical methods and statistics algorithms from basic exploratory analysis to advanced multivariate and geostatistical procedures. Users can write their own functions and/or interface with other software. High quality presentation graphs are made easily and quickly in R. Dr. Jack Schuenemeyer, President Southwest Statistical Consulting, LLC, has used R in researching and teaching for over 30 years and has taught short courses in R. In 2012 he taught a class for graduate students at the University of Freiberg, Germany and U.S. Geological Survey scientists. He and colleague, Dr. Lawrence Drew used R to develop most of the examples in their recently published book, Statistics for Earth and Environmental Scientists, 2011, John Wiley & Sons. Dr. Schuenemeyer is now offering the following course options:
1. Using R to solve problems in the earth sciences. This is a basic instructional course in the use of R with earth and environmental science applications. Participants will learn the fundamentals of data input/output, data operations, the use of contributed software, graphical displays and how to write functions.
2. Solving earth and environmental science problems using R. This course is intended for those with a basic knowledge of R and focuses on the solution of problems using contributed software and user written functions. Courses may be modified to meet the needs of specific audiences.
We recommend a maximum of 15 participants as the course is taught using examples, discussion, and participant projects with a minimum of lectures. Courses are offered at the user’s place of business or suitable conference facilities. Courses may also be offered at the home of Southwest Statistical Consulting, LLC in Cortez, Colorado.
